Strategically located in the center of North Carolina and midway along the Atlantic Coast, Smithfield-Selma is easily accessible from land, rail, water and air. Major highways and interstates place the area within two days’ trucking time of 60% of the nation’s industrial base. Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), just nine miles from Raleigh, provides efficient and cost-effective travel options for business and leisure travelers. Johnston County Airport, just west of Smithfield, is used for corporate and charter air service. Two sea ports are less than two hours away in Wilmington and Morehead City.

NCDOT is divided into 11 main divisions with 14 local division offices under the Division of Highways located geographically throughout the state. These 14 local division offices are responsible for construction, maintenance, roadside environmental programs, traffic services and the fiscal and facility operations involved in administering these functions. Additionally, the Division of Motor Vehicles operates 124 driver license offices, three mobile driver license offices, nine weigh stations and eight enforcement district offices. Johnston County is located within Division Four of NCDOT.
